Dell laptop won`t recognize my external monitor

Hello TS-Wiki,


This afternoon, my laptop (Dell 5540) stopped recognizing my external monitor. So, while the laptop is functional, it`s tough writing code on the small screen. I`ve used another laptop to confirm that the monitor and HDMI cable are fine. Also, I`ve run through all the latest Windows updates and the Dell Support Assist updates. Any chance you can take a look? I must be missing something.

The laptop is working properly now and can see the external monitor! I think your display adapter re-installation worked, but only after I shut the machine down. Not sure why, but a restart wasn`t enough.

I`m connecting directly to the monitor via HDMI cable (no dock). I uninstalled both display adapters (Intel and NVIDIA) from device manager and ran Dell Command Update/Support Assist to look for new drivers. Unfortunately, the laptop still won`t recognize the external monitor. Any other ideas?

Hi Satya,


Are you connecting the monitor directly via HDMI port or docking station?


You can try to reinstall your graphic driver to see if help:

1. Open Start

2. Search for Device Manager and click the top result to open the app.

3. Double-click to expand the Display adapters branch.

4. Right-click the adapter, and select the Uninstall device option.

5. reboot machine


Install/update all drivers via Dell command update:

1. Download Dell Command | Update 4.0

2. Update driver (Include graphic driver) from the app
